Care and Maintenance of your Mail-Order Fruit

Your Hale Groves mail order fruit arrives at your doorstep at the peak of freshness and flavor. Mail-order fruit can remain fresh and healthy even longer, simply by following these simple tips from your friendly Hale Groves mail-order fruit purveyor:

Storing Your Mail Order Fruit: Most mail order fruit will stay fresh at room temperature for several days, but for best results, and optimal freshness, store your fruit in a plastic bag or in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator.

Freezing Your Mail Order Fruit: Fresh squeezed citrus fruit juice and grated peel can be refrigerated or frozen.  Whole citrus fruit itself should not be frozen.

Peeling Your Mail-Order Fruit: There are several ways to peel a piece of fruit. Here are some of the most common:

Round Peeling: Use a slight sawing motion to cut the outer colored peel away from the fruit in one low spiral. After the peel has been removed, cut lengthwise with the curve of the fruit to remove the white membrane.

Segmented Peeling: This can be done by hand, or with a citrus peeler, and involves gently separating the fruit along its natural divisions.

Using Grated Peels: The outer colored layer of the peel is called the zest, and can be used to enhance and add flavor to salads, desserts, and more.

Now that you know how to peel and store your mail order citrus fruit, why not try this tasty recipe?

Cardamom Citrus Fruit Salad

You Will Need:

1 large ruby red grapefruit
3 navel oranges or a combination of navel oranges, blood oranges, tangelos and/or tangerines
1/4 cup honey
2 Tbsp fresh lime or lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
1 Peel the fruit. Cut away the membranes of the individual segments with a sharp knife. Collect the peeled segments in a bowl.

Directions
Drain off any excess juice from the fruit into a small saucepan. Add the lime juice, honey, and cardamom to the saucepan. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 10 minutes and then remove from heat and let cool to room temp. Pour over fruit mixture and gently fold in so that all the fruit is coated. Let stand for 15 minutes or chill until ready to serve.
